Organic textiles can be different from conventional fabrics. Depending on the product, they may be made using organically grown natural fibres, traditional hand-printing or block-printing techniques, natural or plant-based dyes, and other carefully considered production methods.
These beautiful fabrics often carry their own natural character — slight variations in colour, texture, weave or print placement may occur, especially in handcrafted or naturally dyed pieces. Rather than taking away from the garment, these variations are part of what makes each piece special and unique.
Organic, naturally dyed and handcrafted describe three different things. A product can be one, two, all three, or none of these — always check the individual product description to see which applies.
Describes how the raw fibre was farmed — for example, organic cotton grown without many synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. It does not automatically describe the dye, trims or embroidery used.
Describes how the fabric was coloured — using plant or botanical sources such as indigo, turmeric or madder, rather than conventional synthetic dyes. A naturally dyed fabric is not automatically organic.
Describes how the fabric was made or decorated — such as hand block printing or hand weaving. A handcrafted process is not automatically organic or naturally dyed.
Organic clothing generally refers to clothing made from fibres grown according to recognised organic farming practices, such as organic cotton. Organic farming restricts the use of many synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and focuses on farming methods intended to support healthier soil and more responsible use of natural resources.
However, "organic" describes the way an eligible fibre is produced — it does not automatically mean that every part of a finished garment, including its dyes, trims, embroidery or accessories, is organic. Please check the individual SBC product description for the exact material and product information.
People may choose organic clothing for several reasons, including:

Natural fabrics such as cotton are often appreciated for their softness and breathability, and some people with sensitive skin may prefer clothing made with fewer harsh chemical treatments.
However, organic does not mean allergy-free or irritation-free. Everyone's skin is different, and dyes, finishes, embroidery, metal decorations or other components may still cause sensitivity in some individuals. If you have particularly sensitive skin, please check the product composition carefully before purchasing.
Organic agriculture generally aims to reduce reliance on certain synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and encourage farming practices that support soil health and biodiversity. This can help reduce some of the environmental pressures associated with conventional fibre production.
However, no clothing is completely impact-free. Growing fibres, producing fabric, dyeing, manufacturing, packaging and transportation all use resources. For this reason, we prefer to describe organic clothing as a more thoughtful choice, rather than claiming that it causes no environmental impact.
Using plants does not automatically mean harming the planet. Many textile plants are agricultural crops that can be grown, harvested and replanted — cotton, for example, is cultivated specifically for its fibre.
Plant-based dyes may also be produced from renewable botanical materials such as leaves, flowers, roots, bark, fruit peels and other plant sources. Some processes can even make use of agricultural by-products that might otherwise be discarded. What matters is how the resources are grown, harvested and processed — responsible sourcing and production can reduce environmental impact while still allowing us to benefit from nature's renewable resources.

An organic fabric may be made from organically grown fibre but still use conventional dyes. Similarly, a naturally dyed garment is not automatically organic. If an SBC product uses natural dyes, plant-based dyes, vegetable dyes, hand block printing or another special process, this will be mentioned separately in the individual product description where that information is available.

Natural dyeing is a beautiful traditional craft, but the exact dye source and process vary from one product to another.
Hand block printing is a traditional textile technique in which artisans carve designs into blocks — often wooden blocks — and apply the pattern manually onto fabric.
Because the design is placed by hand, you may notice small variations in print placement, colour intensity, pattern alignment and pressure marks. These subtle differences are part of the handcrafted character of the fabric and should not automatically be considered defects.
The price of a garment depends on many factors. Organic and handcrafted textiles may cost more because they can involve certified or specially sourced fibres, smaller production quantities, traditional printing or weaving techniques, skilled artisan work, more labour-intensive processes, special dyeing or finishing methods, and additional sourcing and quality-control requirements.
The higher price is therefore not simply for the word "organic"; it may reflect the materials, workmanship and production process behind the garment.
Some naturally dyed, hand-dyed or traditionally printed fabrics may release excess colour or soften slightly in colour during the first few washes. This can be a normal characteristic of certain dyeing methods.
We recommend following the individual product care instructions carefully and, where advised, washing darker or strongly coloured garments separately during the first few washes. Colour behaviour varies by product, so please refer to the Product Description and Care Instructions.
Not necessarily. Handcrafted, handwoven, hand-block-printed and naturally dyed textiles can have slight variations in colour, weave, texture and print placement — these characteristics can be part of the handmade nature of the product.
However, genuine manufacturing damage or defects are different and will be handled according to SBC's applicable Returns, Refunds & Exchanges Policy.
Always follow the care instructions provided for the specific product, because different fibres and dyes require different treatment. As a general guide:
For delicate, heavily embellished or specially dyed garments, professional dry cleaning may be recommended. The individual product care label or Product Description should always take priority over this general guide.
Where suitable for the fabric, gently reshape the garment after washing and dry it naturally in the shade. Prolonged strong sunlight can affect the colour of some fabrics, particularly naturally dyed or richly coloured garments. Avoid tumble drying unless the product care instructions specifically permit it.
Ironing requirements depend on the fabric. As a general precaution:

Make sure the garment is completely clean and dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from prolonged direct sunlight and moisture.
For delicate or special garments, a breathable cotton or fabric storage bag is generally preferable to long-term storage in airtight plastic. Heavily embellished garments may be better stored folded rather than hung for long periods, as their own weight can sometimes stretch the fabric.
Depending on supplier availability and the individual collection, SBC may offer clothing made from certified or supplier-described organic fibres such as Organic Cotton, Organic Linen, Organic Hemp, and other specifically identified organic natural fibres.
Some collections may additionally feature hand block printing, hand printing, natural/plant-based dyeing, handwoven textiles or traditional artisan techniques. These processes should not automatically be assumed to be organic — the individual product description will identify the information applicable to that particular item.

Silk is a natural animal-derived fibre, but natural does not automatically mean organic. Banarasi refers primarily to a traditional weaving style and textile tradition — Banarasi fabrics can be produced using different fibres, so the word Banarasi itself does not mean organic. Art Silk means artificial or imitation silk and can be made from manufactured fibres or blends; it should not be described as organic unless the actual material and certification specifically support such a claim.
SBC will describe these materials according to their actual product information rather than grouping them automatically under Organic.
Only products specifically identified as Organic in the product title, category, label or description should be treated as part of SBC's Organic Collection.
